Docked in Falmouth? The Best Shore Excursions That Still Get You Back to the Ship
What to do on a cruise stop in Falmouth, Jamaica: drive times to Dunn's River, rafting, beaches and Montego Bay, plus how to plan around all-aboard.

Falmouth is one of Jamaica's busiest cruise stops, and it's perfectly placed on the north coast: Montego Bay is to the west, Ocho Rios to the east, and rivers, beaches and great houses are all within an hour or so. The catch is that your day is set by the ship. Here's how to choose a shore excursion that fits, and how to make sure you're back on board in good time.
First, work out how much time you really have
Take your all-aboard time (not the departure time) and work backwards:
- Allow 30–45 minutes to get off the ship and through the port, more on a busy day.
- Plan to be back at the port at least an hour before all-aboard. Traffic on the north coast highway is usually light, but a slow truck or a roadside stop can add time.
- What's left is your excursion window. For most calls that's five to seven hours, which is plenty for one big attraction or two smaller ones.
A private driver who meets you at the port gate and watches the clock for you takes most of the stress out of this.
Shore excursions from Falmouth, by drive time
| Destination | Approx. drive from Falmouth | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Falmouth town & Georgian architecture | a few minutes | Short calls, history |
| Martha Brae bamboo rafting | about 15–20 min | A relaxed river float |
| Montego Bay beaches & the Hip Strip | about 35–45 min | Swimming, shopping, jerk |
| Green Grotto Caves, Discovery Bay | about 40–50 min | Families, a cool break from the sun |
| Dunn's River Falls, Ocho Rios | about 1 hr 15 min | The classic Jamaica waterfall climb |
| Blue Hole, above Ocho Rios | about 1 hr 20 min | Rope swings and cliff jumps |
Times are approximate and depend on traffic. Negril is about two hours each way, which is usually too far for a port day.
Our favourite ways to spend a Falmouth port day
Dunn's River Falls and the Blue Hole
The most popular choice for a full day in port. Go to Dunn's River first, before the crowds build, then head up into the hills for the turquoise pools of the Blue Hole. It's a long but very doable day if your ship is in port for seven hours or more. Read our Blue Hole guide for what to bring.
Martha Brae rafting and a Montego Bay beach
A gentler day: float down the Martha Brae River on a bamboo raft steered by a raft captain, then drive west for a swim and lunch in Montego Bay. Both are close enough that you're never far from the ship.
Falmouth town and Good Hope
If you have only a few hours, stay close. Falmouth's streets are lined with Georgian buildings from the town's sugar-trade days, and the old plantation estates in the hills behind it make an easy half-day.
Tips for a smooth shore day
- Bring cash in small US bills. Entrance fees, lockers and snacks are easier with cash.
- Pack water shoes and a dry bag if you're doing waterfalls or rafting.
- Keep your ship card and ID on you, and save your driver's WhatsApp number before you leave the ship.
- Agree the plan before you set off: where you're going, how long at each stop, and what time you'll be back at the port.
Booking a private shore excursion
With a private driver you set the pace, skip the tour-bus queues and can change the plan on the day. Tell us your ship, the date and your all-aboard time, and we'll suggest a route that fits, with a comfortable buffer built in.
