Nine Mile: How to Plan a Day Trip to Bob Marley's Birthplace from Montego Bay
Visiting Bob Marley's birthplace and resting place at Nine Mile, St. Ann: the drive from Montego Bay, what the tour covers and how to plan the day.

High in the hills of St. Ann, the small village of Nine Mile is where Bob Marley was born in 1945 and where he was laid to rest in 1981. For reggae fans it's a pilgrimage, and even if you only know a handful of his songs, the visit is a moving look at the man and the rural Jamaica he came from.
What you'll see at Nine Mile
The visit is a guided tour led by Rastafarian guides who share stories, songs and history along the way. It usually includes:
- The house where Bob Marley lived as a child, with the small bed he sang about in Is This Love.
- "Mount Zion" rock, where he is said to have sat to meditate and write.
- The mausoleum where Bob Marley rests, alongside members of his family.
- The view over the green hills of the St. Ann countryside.
Plan for around an hour on the tour itself, plus time for the gift shop and a bite to eat.
Getting to Nine Mile from Montego Bay
Nine Mile is in the interior of the island, so the last part of the journey is on winding country roads through small villages. From Montego Bay it usually takes around two to two and a half hours each way, depending on the route and traffic. From Ocho Rios it's closer, at roughly an hour.
This is one trip where having a private driver who knows the roads really pays off. The drive itself is part of the experience: hillside farms, roadside fruit stands and a side of Jamaica most resort guests never see.
How to plan the day
- Leave early. An 8am pickup from Montego Bay gets you to Nine Mile late morning, before the midday heat.
- Bring cash for entrance, guide tips and the gift shop. Check current entrance prices before you go.
- Dress respectfully. It's a burial place and a sacred site for Rastafarians.
- Eat local. Ask your driver for a good stop for jerk chicken, festival or fresh fruit on the way back.
Combining Nine Mile with other stops
Because the round trip is long, most guests keep the day simple. If you want to add more:
- Ocho Rios and Dunn's River Falls are about an hour from Nine Mile, so a combined day is possible with an early start.
- A beach stop at Runaway Bay or Discovery Bay on the way back is an easy, relaxed add-on.
Tell us what you'd like to see and we'll suggest a route that doesn't feel rushed.
Good to know
- Opening hours and prices can change, especially on public holidays and on Bob Marley's birthday in February, when there are celebrations in the village.
- The roads are narrow and curvy. If you get carsick, sit up front and take something before the trip.
- Photos are welcome in most places, but ask your guide before taking pictures at the mausoleum.
